I once heard a prominent doctor speak about heart health. He said that it was important to exercise. Why? Because it was through exercise that people would see the early warning signs of heart disease. When the body is stressed, a person may experience shortness of breath or other signs of heart disease. In the doctor’s presentation it was important then to act quickly for prevention of further disease. His recommendation for prevention involved several steps. Among them were drug therapy, surgery and other medical interventions that he called PREVENTION.

It was all I could do to stay in my seat and be quiet. Though I know that this doctor saved lives I also know that by the time people seek him out they are already in serious trouble, health-wise. You see, prevention, in my mind, is more about diet, exercise, detoxification and awareness than it is about treatment with drugs.

More than half of premature deaths among men are preventable.

What are some simple adjustments anyone can do for Prevention?

- Consider a low salt diet. Eating too much salty food increases blood pressure and the work the heart has to do.

- Try substituting olive oil, coconut oil and omega 3 oils in recipes instead of trans fats from shortening and imitation butters.

- Eat plenty of green, leafy vegetables and brightly colored organic fruits and vegetables which are higher in vitamin and mineral content. Going organic helps to avoid pesticides and also reduces the nitrates you consume… a known carcinogen and stress on the body.

- Add your own ideas below. I’d love to hear from you.
